You know, the Candice Bergen of The Wind and the Lion and Murphy Brown would have been interesting. Sadly, THAT Candice Bergen wasn't available to Roddenberry & Co.

At the time of Star Trek, she was in the "ice princess' stage of her career. See The Sand Pebbles.

That was my point, Bill. And I have no intention of seeing The Sand Pebbles. Life is too short.

But actually we're skirting the problem. Unless the objective is seeing your favorite actress in a revealing costume--and you can almost always find that somewhere--better a competent actress with a script from Seasons 1 or 2 than an excellent one with a Third Season script.

I always thought Sand Pebbles was a good movie. Depressing but good. It was interesting when the US Navy captain essentially loses control over his men. A good study in leadership failure.

I also really liked the Sand Pebbles. Not your typical Hollywood fare of the 60's.

Connie Stevens was looking to broaden as an actress, so Star Trek would have been a good move for her. However, it would have been hard to schedule her – she gave birth to two daughters during Star Trek's original run! grin

When I want depressing, I read history. Or current events.
