No hot pretzel and mustard? Velveeta isn't a foodstuff: it's camouflage for SF terrain.

Why are Greek and gyros listed separately?

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP14 May 2022 3:02 p.m. PST

Not all Greeks are gyros. I knew one who was a Marine.

More seriously, always remember the editors who put the polls together often lack cultural context, which frequently results in a very literal interpretation of nominations. If one respondent says "Greek" and another says "gyro" no one consolidates.

Not all Greeks are gyros but all gyros are Greek. It originated in Turkey during the 19th Centaury made with pork. The Greeks made it their own with lamb instead of pork and exported it world wide. Virtually all Greek restaurants serve them. At least the ones in my town. Dear editor was the one who set up the poll.

"Dear Editor" has a bad habit of leaving off poll nominations because "I didn't think you were serious." I might extend "lacking cultural context" to include him.

So far Greek/gyros are leading the poll.

I predict that "Mexican" will win, in the US respondents, at least. We do love Mexican foods: tacos, burritos, and nachos (Velveeta cheese for some, but right out for others)! For me, life is better with jalapenos on most foods. ˇOlé! Cheers!

anyone ever eat a non German bratwurst?

jefritrout18 May 2022 4:40 p.m. PST

Yep, A Brazilian guy named Guido made the best bratwurst I've ever had. Granted he lived in Novo Hamburgo (New Hamburg) in Southern Brazil, but he was Italian.

I'd also vote for gourmet pizza, but then I'm not sure the best one on the planet, Hell Pizza, is available in the US.
