Laser cut MDF. This was nominated in the pre-poll discussion but somehow failed to make it into the actual poll… |

Counts as wood, doesn't it? |

Uh, Bill! Speaking as a one-time carpenter, no, it doesn't. |

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally denser than plywood. |

I have used hobby hardwood that you get at a hobby store, you can get variety of real hardwoods. I think that is what is thought of when you say wood, but not MDF. At least not for me. |

Doesn't washers and coins count as metal? |

It depends on the game. Most of my AQOTMF comes with bases. 15 and 25/28mm go on washers. But DBA and ACW 15mm go on MDF. |

Other = MDF. I don't count it as wood, which I consider to mean a structural tissue produced by a plant. Coins and washers are made from metal, but merit separate categories as they are metal products, so I would argue that mdf is not the same as wood, it's a wood product. I used to use wood (balsa or basswood) but laser cut mdf is my go to now. |

Rallynow, depends. I'e been known to raid the local teaching supply company and come back with bags of the hard plastic coins they use to teach kids to count money. MDF and wood. Ketchup and tomato paste are not tomatoes, and MDF is not wood--though I'll grant you it's a grade up from particle board, which as far as I'm concerned is second-rate sawdust and third-rate glue. Yeah, I use MDF for bases. I just don't think of it as wood. Of course, I'm even a little hazy about "trending now." I'm fussy about all three dimensions, but I buy whatever's for sale in bins at the conventions, and if I run out between times, I buy whatever Litko sells that 1/8"/3mm thick, unless I need really flat bases for really tiny castings. |

MDF Most of the bases I have used in the past two or three years are MDF from Warbases. |

I use multiple types of bases for different games. Probably should have been a top five poll. |
