The word for a non-prolific writer is "part-time" 20th. Unless you're Tom Clancy, JRR Tolkien or Margaret Mitchell a hard-cover publication a year will (just) pay the bills. It might or might not support a family. Not enough readers out there, and we're split a lot of ways.

Tolkien had a day job – it's everyone else who got rich from LOTR….

I think this series of polls has just made it crystal clear to me why I stopped buying a lot of these more modern authors. Even as second-hand purchases.

The Long Ships is set in 1000 AD. The poll is limited to books set in 500 AD or earlier.
