The Alamo. It was originally built as a mission and a place of refuge from marauding Indians and was subsequently adapted for defense by the Mexican Army and then the Texican and Tejano rebels.

I like the Scottish choices but when you compare Edinburgh
Castle with Eilean Donan (having been to both) the guys running Eilean Donan have really let the place go

Castillo San Marcos- one of the few I have visited, apart from the Alamo- which I looked for immediately, but, yeah. What Ragbones said.

THE Eilean Donan *on Loch Duich in Kintail!* Not any of those other ones! Glad that is clarified!

But seriously, where's Caernarvon? Or Conway? And even the Alamo could be considered as an improvised fortification.

Castle Pickney, just sitting unused an unloved..

Caernarfon
Conway
Dunadd
Dundurn

All of them, plus the ones I marked, and more besides.
Favourite? All of them.

How about the Atlantic Wall?

And I was really disappointed with Edinburgh Castle. The grandstands just ruin it.
