I think religion is likely to exist and probably should factor into the backstory – unless the game is about a crusading faction, in which case it comes into play as a major factor

How could one have Dune without religion?

It TOTALLY depends on what the author is trying to say.

"Religion won't exist in the future" is a rather glib thing to say. I would like to hear the reasoning behind that. People will be more rational then? That begs several questions, including some I have not thought of yet.

People will be in space, so religion will be in space. Technology, time, and space travel isn't going to negate God/religion. Faith isn't antithetical to reason.

Religion is part of the human condition. There has never been a society without it; it just gets cloaked in another name from time to time. Wherever people are, they will have things which they hold to be true and which guide their actions, things which are in the end unprovable (though not necessarily illogical or irrational-- faith and reason have never been at odds, only people's beliefs about them have). Therefore, if people are in space, religion will be in space. Whether we would recognize it as a faith we know is another matter.

I like the way Dan Simmons handled the subject in his Hyperion cycle.

Wot Frederick has done said.

only if its part of the story why not if its not what point does it make being there.

Mithmee27 Apr 2015 4:44 p.m. PST

Oh yes it needs to be included because it can lead to many different adventures.

It entirely depends on the story. I've written stories with it and without it. Both can work.

Tom Bryant27 Apr 2015 7:08 p.m. PST

I think its up to the author, however, if its important to the backstory and fluff then they need to explain why or why not it exists.

"Must", no. "Should", sure. Thematically, I'm fascinated by issues of extreme faith and devotion taken so far as to cross solidly over to the evil side.

Not required, but certainly could be a factor, even if not an earth based religion. How about the Dzhuaks on their crusade to convert the heathens of the universe?

Weasel28 Apr 2015 7:33 p.m. PST

As others have said, there's no reason it "must" be included.
I do tend to prefer when it's given some consideration if we're doing in-depth world building.

For a miniatures game, it's usually not important. For an RPG, it can be.
If it's a book, it depends on what the book is about, no?

Love the choice "unless it is addressed properly."

How subjective can an answer be?

nazrat30 Apr 2015 7:49 a.m. PST

It isn't necessary but I have no problem with it being there, especially when it represents the Bad Guys. 8)=

Agree with both Fredrick and Winston.
