If anything, I tend to use a bigger playing area with smaller figures, because I generally use 28mm figures for skirmish games and smaller scales for battle games.

My playing area varies based on the scenario. The same scale figures will have a different playing area depending on the needs of the specific scenario being played.

I will, sometimes, change scale to fit an area needed for a scenario into a specific real-world playing location. I prefer 28mm, but will play in 15mm or 6mm to fit specific scenarios on, say a dinner table.

I will also change figure to OOB entities ratio to fit into a specific area. For example, we play the Battle of Puebla on a dinner table every year, so each 28mm mini represents ~100 actual infantry in the battle.

I've played WW II ship battles (1/1200 scale?), all the way up to 54mm Army Men games. The historical games I played were almost always on the same table size: 6' x 10'.

Mostly I play 28mm and 54mm games, now, generally on a 5.5' x 9.5' table size. I sometimes extend my 28mm games using an extra two folding tables added to the end, extending it 5' in length, with a 4' width.

I have played 54mm Army Men games on a 12' x 30' table setup… Having tasted the experience of gaming on such a large table size, I find it hard to settle for anything smaller when gaming with Army Men. It was spectacular. Hoping to run a similar table setup this Summer. IME, gaming with 54mm figures on a massively big table, is something to savor (it was gloriously fun, and I just ref'ed!). Cheers!

My playing area varies with the rules. That may or may not be a function of figure size, but it really doesn't matter.
The size also varies with the table available, too!

I game in 6mm, 10mm, 20mm, 28mm and 40mm so, yes, it changes.

My playing area depends on the rules used and the amount of lead on the table.

Depends on the scenario.

Depends but I do tend to use smaller tables for my 6mm gaming – in part because our big gaming space (5 X 14 feet) is mostly on our dining room table!

Not an absolute, but it tends that way. After all, the purpose of building a lot of the smaller scales was either a board small enough for a regular opponent or a complete set which would fit in a laptop carrier and play on a motel table.

Anyway, most of my 6mm horse & musket armies are geared at about 1"=150 yds. Not too many battles call for a 6'x8' or 6'x12' table at that ground scale.

Rules, Scenario and Scale all dictate playing space
