Sorry to all my fellow Star Wars fans, but it's time to admit that Return of the Jedi kind sucked. Oh, it had some over-the-top spectacle bits, but the plot stank, as if Lucas had run out of all originality. The dialogue was mediocre and serviceable, but little stood out (aside from "It's a trap!", which is only saved by dramatic delivery from an overgrown goldfish). Tack on to that Jabba as a giant mollusk (on a desert planet), the rejected Muppets from Labyrinth as his alien courtiers, Boba Fett being swallowed by a giant, immobile stomach ("Burrrppp"), and worse… do I even have to say "Ewoks"?
Even today I only watch it out of completeness, and roll my eyes and shake my head at the missed opportunities the whole time.

WarGames certainly was a great entry for the era, and despite the dated computer tech, holds up very well.

But it's hard to argue one's favorites. If SW:RotJ is that for you, I can't gainsay it, as much as that may puzzle me. I'd just suggest watching a few other films. Just not Krull or The Day After.

War Games is a great movie, and does hold up well.

But Jedi is my favourite of all the SW movies.

It had to be said, Parzival.

Now, let's all celebrate, Ewok-style! Jub-jub ee ah dub-dub! Or whatever. Celebrate the love!

I always thought that The Day After was the feel-good movie of the year.

This was a colossal waste of time.

It's a problem. My class at OCS was made to sit through The Day After, and I'd have paid money to be excused--if they hadn't already cleaned me out, of course.

The problem is that "science fiction" isn't a film genre in the same way "noir" "romantic comedy" or "biopic" are. You can like one of these movies more than another, but there's pretty much no way to say that one's better than the others.

And if we tried to start a "best pace opera" or "best hard-SF" poll, we'd be flooded by nominations which didn't remotely quallify.
