Mostly I don't, because mostly I game periods when limbers aren't a thing. But I've painted and used a few for gunpowder era battles. Basically as markers that artillery is limbered or not.

I use limber in some circumstances, not all.

I use them in road columns to show the proper spacing along the road. Otherwise, I usually don't. However, deployed artillery batteries occupied a lot of the space behind the guns with ammunition caissons and limbers.

I paint them for all periods and use them when I can. As noted above artillery took up a lot more space than many folks realize.

You don't know what your missing, but will admit they were on bottom of list that I finally got to.

I use them most of the time. I have them for my 15mm ACW games. In some scenarios the unit and terrain density is such that it doesn't give room for them. But I use them as often as I can, even to just have a few on the table for looks.

I am planning to have limbers for my 15mm FPW games. Just haven't had time to do them.

I am not sure I am going to have limbers for my 28mm games. Proper AWI limbers take up a lot of room. I may paint up some for my 28mm 2nd Boer War games, not as many guns on the table at one time.

Don't use them because I have yet to buy/paint limbers – have started to paint up some for my 15mm ACW and 6mm Napoleonics – thinking about them for SYW but as Old Contemptible notes, they do take up a lot of space at 28mm

I use limbers except where guns are already emplaced (and their transport already sent away …

If you aren't using limbers how can you justify having Guns on the table? Emplaced Guns are one thing, but mobile Guns are a very different animal! Plus limbered Guns make a great target if you have them in range!

Limbered guns as a target actually is a conundrum for me, should they be a easier target than guns unlimbered and set?

CHRIS DODSON03 Nov 2021 1:40 a.m. PST

I always use limbers and teams as they help to represent the ground space taken up by real artillery units with the consequent restrictions on units adjacent.
