I saw the premier 2nd season episode of Victoria on Sunday. They introduced a new character in the queen's household – a crotchety old duchess played by Diana Rigg. You could still see Mrs. Peel under the wrinkles and the voice was easily identifiable.

Squir-rel Girl, Squir-rel Girl!
She's a human and also a squirrel.
Can she climb up a tree?
Yes she can, easily!
That's why she's called Squirrel Girl!

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl!
Best current Marvel series out there.
Best female super hero ever.
Heck, Best super hero of any sex (or not) ever.
Dreamed up by Kirby himself, too!

In her first ever outing, she beat up Doctor Doom. Since then she's defeated Kraven the Hunter and Galactus, and pretty much anyone else.
The world is nuts for Squirrel Girl!

Seriously, if you haven't read The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series, you need to. Not only is the character likeable, relatable, and just plain fun, the series offers some of the best spoofs of Miller, Moore, et al I've ever seen. Everything is a laugh riot, down to the editor's "footnotes." Delightful book, and a hero you can share with your daughters, granddaughters, sisters, wife, Mom and Grandma without any embarrassment whatsoever. (Now available in graphic novel format, and probably at your local library. Check the Teen department. If they don't have it, tell 'em to get it!)

I didn't collect superhero comics as a kid, but fell in with a group of miscreants in college who did. The first superhero comic I ever bought was Uncanny X-Men #182, a Rogue solo story, and it sucked me into the Marvel Universe hard. Although I stopped buying comics years ago, I still consider Rogue the character that sparked my interest in the genre.

There is no respect for the classics.

Nile Etland
Maleen, Goth and the Leewit
Jirel of Joiry
Clarissa MacDougal, the Red Lenswoman

Anyone who doesn't get the references, see me after class.

So no love for Miho from Sin City.

And for the more modern,

Cordelia Naismith
Granny Weatherwax

There is some unvoiced conviction that "action characters" or "superheroines" should be in skin-tight outfits, of possibly chainmail. OK for Jirel and Clarissa above. But a plain black dress and pointy hat works fine, too. And Cordelia is menacing in Survey Service fatigues, and terrifying with a shopping bag in one hand.

RP,

I wonder where Greebo, Nanny Ogg's vampire eating tomcat, would fit in to the Action Hero/Super Hero pantheon. Your mention of Granny made the neurons fire in that direction.

Other:

Georgette Kokoczinski, aka "Mimosa", who served as a nurse in the Durruti Column during the Spanish Civil War but also regularly took part in night raids behind Nationalist lines with the Hijos de la Noche (Sons of the Night) commando group.

Mika Etchebéhère who commanded the POUM unit in Madrid after her husband, Hipólito, was killed in battle.

But the greatest female semi-fantasy hero of all is of course Tomoe Gozen, 12th century Japanese warrior women of the Heike Monogatari and Genpei Jōsuiki/Seisuiki:

Yes, a strong second for Cordelia Naismith!
