Okay, Last of the Mohican was a fictional work by Cooper. It is not based on a true story, at all. It is a work of fiction.

Oh, cut Fennimore Cooper a little slack. The siege of Fort William Henry, the surrender and the subsequent atrocities are all historical enough. I'd have said it took place below history book level. Most historical fiction does. "Show Based on a True Story" is not the same as "Documentary" or "NBC White Paper."

I think the movie was Letters from Iwo Jima – which I really liked because I felt a lot of sympathy for Private Saigo, surrounded by suicidal fanatics, who just wanted to get home to his family

Yes, Letters from Iwo Jima is probably what was meant. I voted for it despite the error! Much better than the first part, what was it titled again?
