Interesting idea. I had been thinking about something like this. So perhaps in the future. |

The closest I've come is getting infantry close enough to a mortar platoon to assault it. |

During the Battle of the Bulge American howitzers were using shells with very, VERY short fuses for direct fire against German infantry assaulting their positions. Worked pretty well, apparently. |

In my homebrew AWI game a mortar unit can't attack anything in its own zone, allowing infantry to freely assault and destroy it if they get close enough. (I use a simple zone-based movement and range system in the game, which is intended for light battles with classic plastic AWI "army men" figures.) |

As noted mostly applies to mortars – while we have not gamed with rockets we do allow our artillery to fire open-bore at assaulting infantry – not that it typically does them any good |

In Dirtside 2 ( My main ground based rules), off-table artillery units are permitted, and so is Counter-Battery Radar, so the matter turns into artillery duels for the most part. But I have allowed air units to move off-table and strike at Off-Table positions ( Rolling a d4 to determine ho many turns it takes for VTOLS to reach the artillery unit). There is no minimum range for on table artillery in the rules, and most artillery is permitted to make direct-fire attacks at a slight change in effectiveness, so assaults are risky yet worthwhile at times. |
