Hollywood, where a great story can be reduced to garbage by a producer/director and/or actors "vision" of how it should be.

Now, I'd have said "They Died with their Boots on" was--OK, inaccurate as all get-out, but at least it improved on reality. ("Fort Apache" might be far enough out to rate as "inspired by" rather than "based on.")

Same thing with "The Wind and the Lion."

"Based on a true story"…yes there were people in it.
