Patton wasn't very good history, but it was certainly entertaining. :)

I'd say in some respects Patton was VERY good history. More important to get the essence of a man or a situation than to get the dates and tanks right.

Much as I enjoy the story in film and as a novel, I think Master and Commander (especially the film) is just a bit too far from 'based on a true story' to be on this list.

The movie Master and Commander (and its parent novel The Far Side of the World) is based on the real pursuit and capture of the American Naval vessel USS Essex, which was terrorizing British whalers during the War of 1812.

"M & C" is both a realistic o naval life and warfare in the Napoleonic Era and, as noted by Parzival, based on a real event.
