I think most would have ranked Frederick the Great over Alexander of Macedon & Gustavus Adolphus. So I don't see what the big deal was.

Well Alexander did quite well but died young (probably due to being poisoned).

Gustavus Adolphus died in battle so that does tend to be big marks against.

True Frederick had to fight the French, Austrians and Russians holding his own against all three but that was about it.

For me it has to be Richard the Lionheart.

There is something to be said about being able to stave off the three largest powers in Europe
