I actually took a class in theater, but the ones I've seen have mostly been voted out already. An American in Paris got voted out?

"An American in Paris" should not have been voted out. Also "Help" is considered a classic and is shown in films schools.

Help, which I have seen, and is *not* shown in film school (you're thinking of A Hard Day's Night, which is shown in film schools), is *not* a musical, though Beetles songs are cleverly used throughout.

Again, drama expressed through song is an essential element of a musical. Just because somebody sings, or one likes the soundtrack, or a lot of music gets listened to by the characters, does *not* qualify the movie as a musical.
