Seems a boring concept except as a campaign framework to generate battles.
Otherwise it's an exercise in resource management and engineering.

A siege isn't really a wargame, as it really focuses on other things and only uses the threat of combat or occasional skirmish as a tool.

it's an exercise in resource management and engineering.

I do that for a living and don't think it's boring at all.

But I also don't game sieges. I do, however, use sieges as a background for all kinds of other micro-engagements of events that happen within a siege. It's a good environment for RPGing adventures, too.

Siege assaults are fun. The lead up (the ACTUAL siege) would be a long, drawn out, boring affair which I can't imagine playing and enjoying.

How long, boring or dull the process is is down to the rules and tools used to play the siege.

This could be quick and dirty or long and tedious – pretty much like all wargames rules, there's nothing necessarily different about the challenges of playing a siege to a normal wargame.

Although I'd agree it has more in common with campaign backdrop than the usual field encounter points battle.

No. Just not appealing to me.

Occasionally.

I think as a small skirmish game of part of the assault it would be fun, the whole over the wall thing (or up from the tunnel).

I love gaming assaults on fortified positions, either hastily built or permanent, but sieges with tunneling, digging approach trenches, bombardments, etc doesn't appeal to me.

As with most games, if some has the minis/rules/terrain, I would be happy to play

The key to doing a siege game is to select the correct time scale. Unless an assault is happening, normally six turns per day (four daylight, two dark). When an assault (or sortie) takes place, interrupt the appropriate turn and go to your regular rules for the intensified action.

And don't forget that you need to game the whole campaign surrounding the siege, including relief attempts and perhaps even political negotiations.

Does anyone have any siege rules to recommend?
