I've found Field of Glory to be a challenge. Possibly the brain is slowing down. Possibly they're a little obtuse (though I think, worth the effort). I've read Die Krieg's Kunst (SYW) recently & though i haven't yet gamed with them, they seem quite clear & easy to absorb. Horses for courses? |

For Ancients, I play Warrior. For Napoleonmics, I play Empire for Dummies. For sci-fi gang warfare, we play an amalgam of GorkaMorka and Necromunda. Virtually the same. The above are run by skillful GMs who know the game better than I do. For AWI, we play Age of Reason and The Sword and the Flame. For Colonials, we play TSATF. For vsf, we play GASLIGHT. For WW2, we play Flmes of War. And, if we "get it wrong" occasionally, so what? |

We've been using "families of rules" so: Borg rules (CCA/Battlelore/Memoir) for ancients, medieval, fantasy and sci-fi DBx rules (DBA, HOTT, DBHx) for ancients, medieval, fantasy and horse and musket This allows us to use some common, core mechanics in most games, although subtle differences do sometimes cause confusion. We often then rotate in different rules to try them out. Recently we've added in Maurice Lite (horse and musket) and I think they are a clear winner that will likely displace DBHx for the SYW and AWI. |

Maybe 2 or 3 per period. They usually are different types, one being skirmish and the other being massed battles
different levels of representation I guess. |

I game in 2 groups. Both use a home grown set of rules. One is pretty much WWII specific, the other can be adjusted for cavemen versus woolly mammoths to near future with tactical nukes. We have also experimented with Ambush Alley in one group. |

I try to keep it to one rule set per genre, but that only happens after I try a bunch of different ones to see which one works best for me. |

We game a core 5 sets with an additional 2 or 3 we rotate in. Usually the infrequent games don't require all of the players to be 100% up on the rules. |
| gounour | 09 Feb 2012 11:34 p.m. PST |
only one in regular year but every summer, we meet for one or two week, and play 4-5 others (the same every year), is it "regularly" for you? |

I struggle with the exact same problem, and I've officially put a moratorium on new rules and new periods. Currently have about 6 games in the rotation that I own miniatures and rules for, these are: Ancients: Impetus Napoleonic: Lasalle WW2: FoW WW2 Naval: GQ3 Modern: CWC Sci-Fi: Infinity Though I don't actually know all those rules well, only about half of them can I lead the game without the help of another person. The other half I would rely on my opponent knowing the rules to make them playable. There are also other games that I will play and enjoy on occasions when other members provide all the mini's and rules, these include CY6! and some homegrown Napoleonic rules. |

To quote Rimmer: "I've no smegging idea!" I have four – no, five – different sets just for VSF. Gutshot. About four different WWII sets. At least two Napoleonics. FOG and FOG:R. Koenig Krieg. TSATF, um
call it 16 or so, with varying frequencies? |

I like using rules from a "family" with similar mechanics as it makes it easier to add a new period/gaming level. For example, I use Iron Ivan skirmish rules which allow to do do French and Indian War (and AWI through War of 1812) with This Very Ground, as well as WWII platoon level with Disposable Heroes and WWII squad level with Point Blank. There are some basic mechanics which make it easier to a new set without much difficulty. The other sets I play are Impetus for Ancients/Renaissance and Republic to Empire for Napoleonics. |
