I tend to find a "family" of rules from one source that has a set for skirmish and a set for battle games in the same era/period/genre, (like Two Hour War Games like Long Rifle and Muskets and Mohawks, for example,) and use those.

I use different rules for the same period but not just because of complexity …

There are no perfect historical rules and I like to choose a set that matches best the characteristics of a given battle – some give a greater emphasis to command and control, some are more personality driven … some are more attritional, some come down to luck. I try to pick the horse for the course.

For reasons of scale (skirmish vs army level) I play different rules for the same period.

KTravlos17 Dec 2014 7:15 a.m. PST

Yes. For the Age of Rifles I use

a) Neil Thomas 19th century Rules for games that need to be short on time and space

b) Black Powder for games that need to look good

c) Altar of Freedom, 1859 Grand Tacticals, and Big Bloody Battles for playing historical battles.

My 10mm armies are based so as to permit me using them with any rules

For me, the use of different rules doesn't have anything to do with complexity but, rather, with what one is trying to game.

Just noticed joker's response so, what he said.

Yes, like others have said: depends on the scope of game I am playing.
For example my 6mm WW2 Microtank armies are used with Crossfire, Red Poppy, Kampfgruppe Normandy, Spearhead, Panzer Korps and Assault Gun.

I couldn't understand the question.

Not sure what the question is.

Which is the poll question?

Is it.

"Does the level of complexity of a rule-set change for you based on available time or familiarity with the rules?"

Or is it.

[Do you use?] "Different Rules for the Same Period?"

Needs some editing here guys. Editors need to read these poll questions before posting them.

I mostly only play WW2, some cold war/moderns and scifi but I have tons of rules we've played for each.

It's like eating pizza, there's no reason to stick with just pepperoni when the fine people at the store will also offer to put ground beef on one.

Right now for me the real fun of the hobby is comparing various gameplay approaches to the same set of tactical issues.

So, yes. Lots of different rulesets for the same era, and not just to represent different command levels. Different rulesets for the same era and same command levels. To distill into my own perfected house rules, of course.
