"Sci-Fi Books/Shorts That Deserve a Movie or TV Series (Round 1F)" Topic

Down to six this time, and one or two of those have serious science problems. You can work with invented science or pseudo-science, but outdated inventions have a more limited viewership. Tom Swift (Jr) and his Rocket Ship won't get you much further than (the original) Tom Swift and his War Tank.

I find it interesting that voting "none of the above" doesn't cancel a previous vote for one that I grudgingly selected. 😄
This alphabetical tranche contains nothing cinematic worthy. Everything I thought worthy had already appeared.

Hmph. Not often that I find a harsher and more pessimistic critic than myself. Have you read Hubbard's To the Stars? If I were picking one of this tranche for cinematic greatness, that would be the one--a reluctant leader, and relativity taken seriously. There are a thousand ways to screw it up, and Hollywood is getting better at screwing up good ideas these days, but if everything lined up right…

Of the others, Schmitz' Witches of Karres could just flat be fun done right. Norton's "Witch World" and Bujold's "Vorkosiverse" struck me as having TV potential, if a producer had some real imagination. Plenty of decent stories which could be told in an hour or two, a rotating cast and in Bujold's case the changes of mood any long-running series could use.

Mind you, if someone gave me a chunk of money and told me it had to be used turning printed stories into movies or TV, I might abandon SF altogether and see what could be done with "Lady Molly of Scotland Yard" or Hambly's "Benjamin January" books.

I mourn the loss of the old RKO "40 Acre" Lot. It would have been perfect for the Januaries. In fact, it was New Orleans for at least two TV shows.

I am operating on the assumption that *I* am responsible to the studio for the financial success or failure of such a project. This is a TMP Poll, after all! I am responsible to the world for my vote!

When I read that a movie is a "box office failure" when it ONLY makes $250,000,000 USD, it gives me pause.
In the past four attempts in this Poll, I found some that I thought would make a Hollywood Profit. As sleazy as the bookkeeping side of the Business is.
The Hollywood Industry is tight up there with Porn Stars blithely discussing "the industry". One expects smokestacks…

A good Poll might be "What's your favorite version of Dune?"

Hmph. I was going on "could be made into a decent movie/TV show" which is a much lower bar than "you could make money doing this in the present state of the film industry." I'm not sure any nominee in the entire poll could clear that bar.

Bad enough I read Dune and had to sit through the first movie version. If anyone wants me to compare multiple versions, we'll be talking money--and a lot more than theater tickets and popcorn.

But I fully agree: hard to believe porn stars or hookers would blame the customer base for poor sales the way which is currently fashionable in Hollywood. They certainly wouldn't go out of their way to insult people and then proposition them. ("You're a father and a Christian? That's hillarious! Wanna pay $25 USD to see me act even drunker than I am now?")
