i *guess* Hard Day's Night is a "musical," but I dunno. It's just a Beatles movie. But the songs are not part of a libretto, they are not driving the plot, so I'd appeal. Finian's Rainbow is underrated and couldn't be made today. probably couldn't be made when it was first staged and that's why it took 20 years to film it! Just steps on too many toes. But it slipped in during that strange lull in the late 60s thru early 70s when a lot of brave films got made. The wink-wink drug allusions are hilarious to me. "Mentholated tobacco," right!! Hahaha! I read that Petula Clark later snitched on how the cast was smoking reefers all during production. It shows! |
