Depends on the game. Some games like "Risk", it is all about attrition and nothing else. I play a lot of "Commands & Colors" which is mostly about attrition for points but also has scenarios were you get points for objectives. I'd guess that attrition is more important in games then the real world when it comes to winning.

Who is this "Megadeth" person, and how did he come to steal the tag line from The Travelling Executioner? (Stacy Keach, 1970. "Killing was his business--and business was good.")

"Killing is our business and, gentlemen, business is good."

Several speakers, Americal Division orientation, Chu Lai, August 1971.

At historicon a 10 years ago the GM said that the victory for my side would be getting a unit to the far left corner of the board. My side and faster more mobile units so we just ran around the enemy. The other side engaged about half of our units. We were a turn away from winning when the game got annoyed and made our army change and attack the defenders. Didn't Sun Tsu make a comment that battles were to be avoided?
