I'm loathe to criticise the choices of others but I do feel what you put into something is what you take out.

Mute Bystander11 Dec 2015 2:50 a.m. PST

Elitist much?

loathe to criticize
That's why you posted that I am sure. DWS.

I would rather play then paint. You don't like my painting? Go somewhere else and let us have fun.

I paint to satisfy myself. I'm not very good but better than I was 20+ years ago when I started. Don't game much as I used to either.

It's just as much work to paint sloppily , so why not try to do a good job?

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP11 Dec 2015 5:27 a.m. PST

I tend to agree Winston.

Elitist much?
No. I wish my painting was good enough to qualify as "elite".

I rather gather to aspire to be better than average is, for some esoteric reason, looked down on by some. Odd.

"It's just as much work to paint sloppily , so why not try to do a good job?"

Because sometimes I really just can't be bothered.

Usually a sign that my current 'project increment' is a bit too big.

Other times I can be bothered.

I like both gaming and painting – and it is much easier to paint for half an hour than to organize a game, although both are great

Ugly games – not my hobby.

If a person who is a sloppy painter paints significantly more figures, they are not spending less time painting. A sloppy painter may spend more time painting than a "decent" painter. The poll can't be answered with any accuracy because it is based on a false premise.

In my experience this statement hasn't been true. Sloppy lets me get done faster so I can play more.

They usually get it done faster and have more time to game. That said, you would really have to define "fun." The good painters are clearly having fun painting or they wouldn't do it!

Micman Supporting Member of TMP11 Dec 2015 12:30 p.m. PST

I am a sloppy painter hate it. I wish I had the skill to do better. Takes me as long to do a sloppy job as the folks who paint well.

So it does not get me any more gaming time.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP11 Dec 2015 7:04 p.m. PST

Define sloppy. I don't paint as well as I used to. Less time to paint, shakey hands and fading eyesight affects my painting. There is a point of return on correcting mistakes or using a style that is quicker or less "clean".

I enjoy painting, playing and finishing a project equally.

Not me, I'd spend all my gaming time wishing that I'd done a better job rather than concentrate on the game itself.

Perhaps a sloppy painter has the same level of fun no matter what their figures look like.

Those that strive for better painting results are probably just as happy doing the painting and with their results, even though they may finish fewer figures.

In the end its a wash.

Sounds sloppy to me… evil grin

Since only the sloppy painters know how happy they are they are the only ones who are qualified to speak to the issue of how happy they are. As sloppy painters are not non-sloppy painters, they are not qualified to comment on how much more or less happy than other painters they are.

Well said JJ. A lot of time the dust sniffers who turn up their noses at non "Golden Daemon" standard , non GW level paint jobs can't do the work themselves either. This is how I suspect some of the conversations go…

"OOOOh here! Take a look at this Bondage Goddess of Knhorne I just did! See the ultra detail on her chainmail bikini and the handcuffs she's wearing…" Why can't you paint like that?"

REPLY: "A. I'm not working the 'Chapter approved' GW 28/32/9 million and 6 mm scale that is sooooo popular today with the "in" crowd. B. I'm rarely doing a single character, even in 28mm. and C. I have an army of guys to do that will not be ogled to see if their naughty bits have been shaved or not! I just need to get them to look 'good enough'period!" "Oh, BTW, you DID paint that figure didn't you?"

I use the arms length rule. Depending on the scale if I can see it at arms length I need to worry about it. I also invoke the rules of washcoat and drybrush: Washcoats and drybrushings can hide a multitude of painting sins.
