Textbooks, of course I used highlighters and some margin notes. As I think about it, some rulebooks also got the same treatment.
I do not recall highlighting or writing in non fiction or fiction books

The word for this is "annotation." It is a learned skill.

Some rare books can be more valuable depending on who annotated it. For example, a book owned by Thomas Jefferson with his annotation in the margins would be more valuable than without it.

I tend to write in rules books ( to clarify or change something) and OB books.

It depends. My copy of the Federalist Papers is covered in notes. When I buy a book to do research for a class I'm writing – yes. My Ospreys or fiction books – no.
