I'm having trouble thinking how to count British colonies French overseas provenances and suchlike.especially those that are now independent countries but might not have been when I was there. Either way it's about 20 so I'm saying 15-20. x42 |

USA + Canada = 2 |

I think it's either 19 or 20 depending on how one defines a country (a la 42Brown for French, US and British overseas possessions) – if you are liberal with that then the count goes up to 24 or so – and about half of them courtesy of my various masters (those would be the much less pleasant places to visit) |

Do US states count as countries? It is easy to rack them up when you live in Europe. |
Shagnasty | 07 Sep 2024 9:43 a.m. PST |
As to BTCTerrainman's question; Texas, Alaska and Hawaii for sure. I count Wales and Scotland as "countries" for my total of 5. |
robert piepenbrink | 07 Sep 2024 9:43 a.m. PST |
You don't have to live there, BTC. A good rail trip or a long drive should be good for at least three or four. |

US, I live here. More than a day trip visits = Canada, Scotland, England, and Germany (Bavaria). Passing through including meals and daytrips would add Belgium and Austria. |

Not counting USA, where I live, I've visited 16 countries, all but four of them in Europe and fourteen of them courtesy of the US Army. Jim |

46, pretty much divided between work and vacations. |

I am also counting Wales, Scotland, and England as separate countries. I'd like to count Brittany apart from France while I'm at it, but am restraining myself for now. Aww, seeing Ireland and Greenland from the air doesn't count!! Sad face-y! |
etotheipi | 08 Sep 2024 3:28 a.m. PST |
Depending on whom you ask, there are around 200 countries on Earth. Twenty is about 10%. Kind of a limited range poll. But it makes it easy, since I a, well over 20, pretty much any way the "what is a country" dicussion goes. |
GildasFacit | 08 Sep 2024 6:38 a.m. PST |
Nope, England, Scotland & Wales are not separate countries, any more than Hawaii or Alaska. It isn't a matter of opinion, it is a fact. |
David Manley | 08 Sep 2024 8:57 a.m. PST |
34 – assuming each nation of the UK and each US state don't count :) |
Deucey | 08 Sep 2024 2:25 p.m. PST |
This shouldn't be that complicated! If a ‘region' can compete in the Olympics or World Cup (or is currently banned) then it's a country. |
piper909 | 08 Sep 2024 8:58 p.m. PST |
Ooh, GildasFacit, you'll get a lot of pushback on that issue, I'm thinking! |

My travels extend from Maine to Oklahoma, Florida and Minnesota. Oh, and Montreal and Quebec on separate trips. All by car. That's enough linear miles to cover most of Europe. So I have no apologies. At least I could speak English. Mostly. My attempts at French in Montreal were sad. |
The Last Conformist | 08 Sep 2024 10:54 p.m. PST |
The one that feels a little unfair is the Vatican. I haven't spent a night there, so it doesn't count for this poll, but it has to be the country I've seen the biggest percentage of! |

Interesting point about states – England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are four separate countries within the UK. They have separate parliaments (well, except for England !) Should I count each of the Channel Islands separately? |
advocate | 09 Sep 2024 7:32 a.m. PST |
I think, with Deucey, I'd go with the IOC. |
x42brown | 09 Sep 2024 7:40 a.m. PST |
I think that the Channel Islands. Isle of Man and other tiny Island or cities with parliaments that are dependent on part of there rule elsewhere would not count for the same reasons as Lichtenstein and Luxembourg were ruled out. Mind you I did not count the UK (my home) far less Scotland ans Wales separately nor Falkland or similar. If I had I would easily clear the 20 mark but will not change my vot now. x42 |
noggin2nog | 09 Sep 2024 10:15 a.m. PST |
As an Englishman (from Yorkshire) I definitely count Scotland and Wales as different countries. |
Greg G1 | 09 Sep 2024 10:40 a.m. PST |
21 countries where I spent at least spent a night, been into Switzerland on shopping trips while living in FRG. I've transited the old DDR while on my way to Berlin, I've also spent a couple of days passing through the old Yugoslavia, which would now add 3 more countries. I will be adding another couple of counties at the end of the year/beginning of next. |

I think, with Deucey, I'd go with the IOC. Slightly arbitrary – why not use FIFA and the World Cup? |

Do California, Texas, and Vermont count as countries? |
