As I said earlier, The series by Carter and Arnold are really good.

I'll vouch for the Sutcliff (Rider on a White Horse.) The Anderson (Midsummer Tempest) is mid-range Anderson, but I think you'd want to be thoroughly familiar with a historical event to approach it fictionally through an alternate worlds story.
