Only do 2mm troops.

Painting dirt on them would be ridiculous.

Most of my troops are dirty boots but I do have some units that are parade ground pretty and a few units that are very down and dirty

Depends on the period. 19th century and earlier are mostly parade ground/muddy boots (except for barbarian types), 20th century are covered in dirt.

"Muddy" boots but only because i'm sloppy painting the base

Usually pretty clean, and frequently somewhat spiffier than historical in the Napoleonic Wars and more regular than was normal in the AWI. They only have to please me, after all. As for moderns, who at table-top distance and scale can tell? (My WWII forces being 6mm only makes me more determined to paint them so I can tell the sides apart.)

All of the choices, depending on period, casting, and painting style.

I game with 25-28mm fantasy mini's, as well as 54mm plastic Army Men figures. I apply The Dip/Royal Walnut to almost all of them. It is quick, effective, and efficient.

I will tell you, it is amazing when applied to Skeletons. They end up with a "just dug up", appearance, which I think is quite marvelous.

For plastic Army Men figures, it gives them a look as though they have been fighting in the trenches, and the mud, for some time. It conveys a look of combat experience, which I find quite pleasing. YMMV. Cheers!

Depends on the subject, on my mood and level of hurry, and it's sort of evolved over my career as a painter – early on I did little or no dirt, then I had a Devlan-Mud-over-everything phase, and now I tend to default to somewhere in between.

Also depends on the troop types. My colonials are parade ground for brits and Zulus.

Vietnam collection quite dirty.

It depends …

It depends, some troops some eras more most others pretty much none. I mean I have been covered in swamp much and desert sand – any blob looks the same when so covered. If I spend time and money to find the best looking troops why would I hide it.

The grunge of realism. I used to paint ACW and Napoleonics….after they were done, I splashed not to well mixed watery brownish colors on their boots and pants.
