I disagree, dilettante. I've had many diverse players join in my 2e BattleSystem games in the past few years. All have enjoyed it, all voiced a desire to play in the next game I ran.
I've played numerous other miniatures games, with diverse rules systems and approaches to the mechanics. I still like the 2e BS mechanics, and I've played out most of its rules. The only thing I haven't played yet, since 1992, are the aerial combat rules where two aerial units fight. I've played out ground attacks, and they worked well enough.
On DriveThruRPG.com, 2e BS is a "Gold Best Seller." I have no idea how many copies they've sold, or how often, but the game is solid. It's generally a hard sell to RPG'ers, though, as they are programmed to expect it to play out like the RPG rules… It doesn't, for obvious reasons. It does, however, adapt the RPG concepts to a mass battles game, very well. The buying, collecting, and painting of miniatures, in larger numbers for units, is also a tough sell for most RPG players.
The RPG hobby, is very different from the miniatures war gaming hobby. I am fortunate to have many local gamers who share an interest in both hobbies, enjoying the crossover made possible with 2e BS rules.
The 2e BS game system is pretty solid for what it does. It has withstood the test of time, for me, and for the players who join in my games. We keep coming back to this game, with gusto and bravado. We have been enjoying 2e BS, enthusiastically, for 32 years and we're still enjoying the game rules. We've tried a few other fantasy rules, but 2e BS is the one we enjoy the most. Cheers!
