If the KKK, etc wanted to thwart civil rights legislation, their best bet was to leave the ineffective JFK in place. LBJ becoming president was a disaster for those opposed to civil rights. LBJ was a fascinating mess of contrdictions. If you think that LBJ's championing of civil rights legislation was simply a cynical or pragmatic exercise on his part, I suggest that you read the Caro biography (among other things). |
