"Doctor Who: Classic Versus Modern" Topic

I never watched a single episode of it always struck me as a childish cult show, that was only on late at night on the weekend. Only on a PBS channel, along with other weird stuff.
So… No interest.
Sorry. 🤷

It's a both/neither/sorta situation.

The first four Doctors are great characters. The stories are a bit hit-and-miss, and unfortunately much has been lost, and the effects are less than was possible at the time— the BBC was clearly cheapskate— but there's a charm and sense of delight to it all.

The Eccleston-Smith era in the restart phase gave us two of the best Doctors worthy of the name, and some excellent additions to the enemies roster (especially the Weeping Angels and The Dark). And of course some great companions— Rose and Amy— But it all started downhill after Smith left (and really got a little feeble towards the end of that), which I put down to writing, and I stopped watching. In fact, I care so little for it now I don't even know if it's still running or being filmed— and don't really care.

So, in the end, Classic wins out for me. Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker— they're a combination that's hard to meet or beat. Tenant and Smith come closest to matching them, but Tom Baker will always be the best.

When I was growing up, in the mid-1970's, I used to watch it on PBS, on an older B&W, secondary TV in the house that the rest of my family rarely watched. They had zero interest in Doctor Who, and that was alright with me -- I didn't have to worry about them wanting to watch the B&W TV, or my show.

A large part of the show's charm was from the Doctor's side-kicks. The special effects were often poor, even for the time, but the show had a genuine charm. It might have a "cult following" here in the USA, but it was/is very mainstream in Britain. It might even be bigger than Monty Python's Flying Circus, for numbers of fans over the decades.

Some of the modern series/Doctors were good, but I still enjoy the classic shows the most. They're available streaming on Pluto, I think. Every once in a while I watch the classic episodes, when my wife is away -- she liked the modern, but she has no time for the classic.

It was not on tv when I would watch it. Too busy unsuccessfully chasing girls.
And those who recommended it were nerds. Worse nerds than me! Whatever they would recommend would not interest me in the slightest. Sort of an anti-recommendation.

Found Doctor Who on PBS in the Baker era. Reluctantly fell in love with the show.

Later saw some Pertwee episodes, like him too.

I liked the recent lady Doctor as a performance, the shows were fun but lacked consistency or real suspense. And then the gay romance subplot felt bolted on.

I've tried watching a few episodes. It is something I just don't 'get.'

The new doctors are awful. It almost feels like someone at the BBC was looking for an excuse to kill the show.

Is "no preference" the same as "I like both but in different ways" ?

I never understood the "Companion" thing. There was always one and it was always a young girl. They would get a new "Companion" every time a new Doctor showed up. What a coincidence. The show started as a campy Sci-Fi show on the BBC in 1963. It was never suppose to last this long. I found it silly and at times down right boring. I did like the "Brigadier" character.

Is that the lady who played the female jem'hadar on Star Fleet Academy which I never watched except for the trailers, which was more than enough for me.
