My son and I occasionally use them for gaming, so we use them for soldiers, buildings, and vehicles.

Made up a Star Wars themed HotT army with my son, but that's the extent of ot.
And since that was LEGO – never 'Legos' I'll say 'Not my cup of tea'.

Pacifying grandchildren?

Not for much longer, though. My son has a 3D printer, so the older grandson is already mustering his forces, and there is talk of the need for a bigger gaming table.

It's the universal constant of miniature warfare. Periods, scales and rules pass away, but the definition of a miniature wargamer is someone whose hobby would be much more satisfying on a larger table.

Did HG Wells ever try to buy the property next door to Sandgate to give himself more maneuvering room?

My boys would get them for Christmas presents. Then put them in cardboard boxes where pieces would intermingle and get mixed up.
There was more to Legos than that??? 🤷

I haven't used them in decades, but in my youth masses of Airfix barbarians died assaulting Airfix Romans defending forts made of LEGO.

Well, not Lego in a while… but I use K'nex for space stations!

I did use Lego for Mechaton (a big stompy robot tank game) and Dragonstone Wars (my own game for MegaBloks fantasy sets). There's also BrikWars (or BrickWars or at one time LegoWars which name had to be changed for obvious reasons.)

I once played a convention mecha game where the giant fighty robots were made from Lego pieces, but I think that's the only time my wargaming hobby and my affection for Lego crossed paths.

I've never had any Lego blocks. A grand child is on the way so I imagine that will change :)

I have a friend who builds space ships and battleships from them but I just admire his stuff.

I have a couple of "L" shaped pieces permanently set for aligning corners of buildings I scratch build. Walls for the same purpose. Even a little weight for holding things down. They never see the table but I use them behind the scenes all the time.

Sounds like we need another option: Entertaining Children

How is that different form "hobby wargaming"? ;)

They make good mould supports, when casting.

I often build castles and forts from Exin Castillos toy sets (made in Spain, sold across the world back in the day). They look like old school Legos but are colored and shaped for medieval fortification building. And no silly cartoony or TV-license bits.

When sets or lots come up on eBay now, they list for a pretty penny. Sigh. But I'm glad I invested in them when I did. For a while, South Texas or Mexican border retailers would sell remaindered sets cheap.

I have never owned Lego and never had access to any of my descendants Lego.

I added an "other" – we used Lego blocks to represent mission modules on warships such as Type 26 and LCS during some wargames I conducted for NATO a few years ago. Each 20' TEU was a single "spot" brick, different colours were different types of module. We stuck them on the 2 spot wide "planks, with the length of the plank and hence the capacity of the ship limited to what the actual ships could carry. I had grabbed a load of my children's Lego collection to take with me and accidentally included a Star Wars Stormtrooper figure in the mix. But no matter, we had a marine sniper team in the mix of options we could use so he represented them :)
