OK, I get it (it's a joke wink) – but the question mixes historical examples with fantasy and the like – therefore can't be answered rationally anyway …

For the historical examples, the non-comedy answer is that you adjust the scales appropriately to your table space and game mechanics … and that will tell you how many you need.

More than that would be too many wink

I understand the words "too" and "many", but when you put them together in that context, I can't suss out the intended meaning …

You can't have too many of anything. Except Skaven – I hate those guys.

When you can't fit any more on your table, that'll do.

Wrong answer!

When you can't fit any more on your table, YOU BUY A BIGGER TABLE! Or two. Or more.

I figure as a general rule, about 8:1 or more. If you want to field 12 judges or imperial storm troopers, your wretched hive of scum and villainy ought to be about 100. More than that you'll have a hard time getting into contact anyway. That can call for some recycling, but after the first 200 figures, painting Gretchen loses some of its charm.

Some answer, no- but Robert is right, after 200 or 300 figs painting goblins can be a bit tedious

Ravening hordes are pretty useless without the horde part.

It took me a while to finish 120 Forest Goblins. And then next week GW made them non persons in the next release.
I was almost afraid to move on to Night Goblins.

So if no one will let you play with them, you CAN have too many Forest Goblins. '

Opolchenie, Cossacks, Artillery and Sorry John (TG) Skaven, along with Goblins, Orcs & Zulus, there can never be enough. As for GW deleting ranges, so people won't game with you any more, ignore them. I thought it was fantasy anyway!
