"Whom do you prefer: Holmes or Raffles?" Topic

For some reason the idea of Holmes and Raffles "not being someone's cup of tea" seems very funny.

Perhaps because they are so frequently portrayed in BBC Radio dramas which are a perfect listen whilst having a cup of tea…and a scone? Why, how kind….

Never heard of Sherlock Holmes? There have been more than 200 films, countless TV shows. Even some books

I could understand not knowing Raffles, who is slightly more obscure.

Never read any Raffles stories only know the character from TV and radio.

Raffles is a very interesting character who is worth investigating – he was written by Conan Doyle's brother-in-law, and the set up is similar to Holmes and Watson, only Raffles and the rather dim "Bunny" Manders are "gentlemen cracksmen" (well Raffles is, Bunny is a useful decoy…). Raffles is a first class cricket player and also fiercely patriotic – they end up in the Boer War at his insistence.

Worth a read if you do happen to like Holmes & Watson.

If you had tea with Raffles, you'd end the meal short a wallet and a watch. To call someone a "gentleman thief" reduces being a gentleman to a class level.

I think you misjudge Raffles slightly – although your wallet and watch might be at something of a risk should one be a bit of a cad.

Naturally, Bunny would have you believe that, 20th. For myself, I think if the CID had put Lady Molly of Scotland Yard on the case, a very different story would have emerged.

But in any case, is it the behavior of a gentleman to steal from anyone he finds objectionable?
