Just getting involved in SYW and searching for rules to use. I will be gaming this period in two weeks which is an amendment of Might and Reason. Don't know yet if I will stick with them, but not too sure if I will.

Something happened to "Charge!" while I wasn't looking?

A lot of these I'm not well acquainted with, of course. Also there are lots of ways to be "best." By most measures, Sharp Practice really can't be compared with, say, Volley and Bayonet. They're not intended to fight the same battles. If I were recommending something, the first question would be "what battles do you want to fight?" Right after that would be "How do you like to base your troops?" Then we could discuss mechanics, easy of play and historical accuracy, but not before.

robert piepenbrink is correct in that we are comparing apples to oranges."By most measures, Sharp Practice really can't be compared with, say, Volley and Bayonet"

I chose Batailles de l'Ancien Regime (BAR) for big battalion play and Sharp Practice for large skirmish.

Skeet, BAR is a good place to start. The rules are easy, historical and inexpensive.

Great point – as I mostly Grand Tactical I rated the ones I have played, which were Age of Reason, Black Powder, Age of Eagles and Volley and Bayonet as well as One Hour Wargames

Based on my experience with Napoleonics I suspect Maurice would be good as well but have not played it yet

Surprised "A Glorious War" hasn't garnered more votes.

I choose "der Kriegskunst", which is based on the also excellent "General de Brigade".
A scenario book for these would be great (hint!).

Other- "The Wargame" by C.S.Grant a classic just like "Charge".
