Elitism is one of those accusations handed out when there are no reasonable arguments left …

…Unless the person is an elitist….

Another way to put it, "Is name calling OK if the opinion of the person you are insulting does not align with your own world view?" Clearly, no.

I find that cries of "elitism" come from the mouths of the inferior.

Exactly! LOL!

If someone is truly an elitist, they won't respond (internally, which is what you ostensibly are trying to change) to the accusation. It is better to show them up in public rather than to rebuke. Decorum is a good place to start.

In general, if someone is being a jerk, someone should speak up.

In gaming circles, elitism tends to take the form of gate-keeping and exclusion.

War gaming is full of elitists that decry and deride that which they judge inferior.

Definitions of an Elitist vary so much it is pretty hard to decry some of the meanings while others have already assumed that the word is inherently insulting.

Sadly many people now believe that all are equal and that no elite actually exists. Good or bad, this is a VERY incorrect assumption.

Yeah, I struggled over how you would define elitism. Most of the clues that I came up with really boiled down to the person being a jerk, though.

I agree with Weasel above, though, in that it ends up as a lot of gate-keeping and exclusion, which will be a self-correcting problem.

Long live the unwashed rabble, the crofters and the sharecroppers. Vive les sans culottes et la revolution! La mort a tous les aristocrates! Down with the elites, let's all be levellers!
Cheers.
