Another poll that is basically "how old are you ?"

grin

Connard Sage03 Feb 2012 7:40 a.m. PST

I don't miss any, but I had a soft spot for 'Airfix Magazine', 'Battle' and 'Mil Mod' back in the day.

Still got some in the loft…

Mapleleaf03 Feb 2012 7:42 a.m. PST

No question MWAN – every issue was packed with ideas

Courier would be close

CPBelt03 Feb 2012 7:43 a.m. PST

Ares was the best. I always looked forward to each issue and read them many times over. Great games as well. That and the old White Dwarf were my favorites, followed by the old Dragon, S&T, and Travellers Aid. Great times in the early 80s! Oh yeah, and Omni, Computer Gaming World, Nibble, Atari World, and other comp mags. I loved reading mags.

Now I read no mags. Way too expensive, boring content.

richarDISNEY03 Feb 2012 8:00 a.m. PST

This was a tough one.
But overall, I do miss Shadis.
They used to have articles on all types of games, not just one or two…
beer

advocate03 Feb 2012 8:12 a.m. PST

I voted MWAN, but would give an honourable mention to Miniature Warfare. And yes, 20thMaine, it is a fair indication of my age.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER03 Feb 2012 8:20 a.m. PST

The Courier the most.

Ron W DuBray03 Feb 2012 8:33 a.m. PST

WD from when it was a real Magazine.

Connard Sage03 Feb 2012 8:37 a.m. PST

WD from when it was a real Magazine.

Which issue was that?

John the Greater03 Feb 2012 8:49 a.m. PST

I really miss Magweb. Not so much a magazine as a compilation of magazines.

I know. Off topic. I will accept my flogging with good grace.

Caesar03 Feb 2012 8:53 a.m. PST

"WD from when it was a real Magazine."

Yes, back when it was along the same lines as Dragon, rather than an advertisement you pay read.

WD from when it was a real Magazine.
Which issue was that?

It was downhill once they went for full cover colours (issue 7)

Jemima Fawr03 Feb 2012 9:19 a.m. PST

I miss the McFarlane-era Miniature Wargames and the early Wargames Illustrated before it plunged over the edge into adverticle-land.

I also really liked the other McFarlane one that would appear once in a blue moon as a sort of 'WI Extra' – Wargames World was it?

JimSelzer03 Feb 2012 9:26 a.m. PST

I voted for Dragon had a sub from like issue 25 and have them all

I also liked JTAS, Mwan.good ole S&T and the General, and Traveller Digest Differet worlds

sad to say that way too many on this list are missed

Personal logo Flashman14 Supporting Member of TMP03 Feb 2012 9:29 a.m. PST

Ya, Wargames World was good – just five issues of that iirc. Old Glory had a great mag too of, I think, five issues too. Maybe six, can't remember.

This is a poll that would have been better served with the "choose 5" format.

I miss The Heliograph, while I liked a lot of them on the list (even publisher narrow ones like Space Gamer (… and … um … Adventure Gamer?)), but there seemed to always be something else to take up the slack. The Heliograph, not so much …

Personal logo Der Alte Fritz Supporting Member of TMP03 Feb 2012 9:38 a.m. PST

MWAN was the best. It was like seeing your best friend die when Hal Thinglum retired.

epturner03 Feb 2012 9:42 a.m. PST

Another vote for MWAN.

What DAF said.

Eric

Willtij03 Feb 2012 9:49 a.m. PST

MWAN. You can get back issues of MWAN and The Courier at Wargame Vault for $3 USD each.

thumbs up

I voted Battle, but I really liked PW as well, and UO, and MWAN

darthfozzywig03 Feb 2012 10:02 a.m. PST

I miss The General, mostly because I enjoyed working at Avalon Hill.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian03 Feb 2012 10:24 a.m. PST

…even publisher narrow ones like Space Gamer (… and … um … Adventure Gamer?)

Are you thinking of The Fantasy Gamer?

wolvermonkey03 Feb 2012 11:02 a.m. PST

Other. I miss Dream Pod 9's Mechapress magazine.

Richard Baber03 Feb 2012 11:37 a.m. PST

Command Post quarterly, just a super read from cover to cover :-)

kyoteblue03 Feb 2012 12:12 p.m. PST

MWAN !!!! I miss it Hal !!!

richarDISNEY03 Feb 2012 12:28 p.m. PST

What the heck is MWAN?
Never heard of it.
beer

Andrew Walters03 Feb 2012 12:41 p.m. PST

For the record JTAS – the Journal of the Traveler's Aid Society – continues as an electronic 'zine, edited by Loren Wiseman of the old days, published bi-weekly by SJ Games. It's only two to five articles every other week, but that's more articles per quarter than the old days of quarterly publication.

Mithmee03 Feb 2012 1:31 p.m. PST

Avalon Hill here.

But would like the White Dwarf to go back to what is was twenty years ago.

Mardaddy03 Feb 2012 2:15 p.m. PST

Dragon magazine – though I have not RPGed regularly in YEARS. At least I have my "Best of Dragon" issues.

Mako1103 Feb 2012 2:39 p.m. PST

The Courier.

Good content and minis reviews, for a reasonable price.

skippy000103 Feb 2012 4:00 p.m. PST

Avalon Hill-scenarios, variants, counters it was wide open.

svsavory03 Feb 2012 4:13 p.m. PST

I voted for The Courier, but could easily have chosen The General and MWAN as well.

Generalstoner4903 Feb 2012 6:12 p.m. PST

The age of Napoleon magazine. It think there were only like 13-14 publishings but the OOB's as well as unit histories simply cannot be equalled. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase an entire collection of them for a steal at a recent con.

HesseDarmstadt6203 Feb 2012 6:55 p.m. PST

I voted for MWAN--have to agree with DAF. It was a sad day when Hal hung up the pen. I also really enjoyed Practical Wargamer--that would be a close second, followed by Battle, JTAS, and the Courier.

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Feb 2012 8:13 p.m. PST

Are you thinking of The Fantasy Gamer?

… er … yep. Thanks. I knew it wasn't right, but I couldn't go check my stash for the right title …

Given up for good04 Feb 2012 3:52 a.m. PST

OK – who is the other Underworld Oracle fan?

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP04 Feb 2012 4:50 a.m. PST

If I'd had more than one vote I'd have been the other – other UO fan !

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP04 Feb 2012 6:49 a.m. PST

Airfix magazine was recently relaunched – so technically it's not gone !

Mooseworks804 Feb 2012 10:12 a.m. PST

Dragon
Dungeon
Warmaster
Town Cryer
Epic 40K

Space Monkey04 Feb 2012 11:01 a.m. PST

Different Worlds for me, though there are a lot of others on the list that I miss as well.

WillieB04 Feb 2012 2:48 p.m. PST

Aside from Wargames Journal most definitely Practical Wargamer.

Grand Duke Natokina04 Feb 2012 5:30 p.m. PST

I always enjoyed MWAN and thought that Hal was a real gentleman.

richarDISNEY04 Feb 2012 9:58 p.m. PST

I am still wondering what MWAN is…?
beer

Scott Kursk05 Feb 2012 12:38 a.m. PST

Autoduel Quarterly. Especially since it was in the heyday of Car Wars. Man, I really miss Car Wars as well.

yawargame.blogspot.com

Personal logo piper909 Supporting Member of TMP05 Feb 2012 6:01 a.m. PST

The Courier for sure. But also, Strategy & Tactics from its heyday in the 1970s. I still have most of those issues and many of the magazine and other SPI games.

kreoseus205 Feb 2012 12:11 p.m. PST

Valkyrie for me, still have a few issues in the attic.

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP05 Feb 2012 12:24 p.m. PST

Wargamer's Digest before it went into article re-runs. The Battle Stations scenarios were way ahead of their time compared to the available WWII rules of the 70's. They are even better today with Blitzkrieg Commander!

MiniPatton05 Feb 2012 6:10 p.m. PST

I never really got into any one magazine.

vagamer6305 Feb 2012 11:43 p.m. PST

MWAN, also well known as "Midwest Wargamer's Association Newsletter". Everytime a new issue arrived it was like having the chance to sit down and talk with a good friend you hadn't seen in a month of Sundays! Just for the record Hal IS still a real Gentleman in every way!

Delta Vee06 Feb 2012 4:11 a.m. PST

challenge, i miss the spread of articles, and my latest Trav news feed , and the funny april issh, and the colour sections for the heavy metal and summer issues.
