If you want to do the battle what choice do you have?

Zulu war players run into this all the time. Not only do you only need them for one battle but at any reasonable "Battle" ratio of guys you might only need 3/8s of a figure for that unit.

I just bought The Alamo and enough figures for the game. I intend to make a family project of it for me and my boys and play it over and over at the local shows.

this is definitely a 1st world problem

They may only be good for one scenario but who says that you only play that once? How many people buy the IJN's "Shinano"?

Good point about Shinano. I'm guessing a large number of naval gamers have Hood (1 fight) Bismark (2) Yamato and Musashi (none versus other ships) etc.

Once you have bought Brunswick dismounted dragoons, you will find all kinds of battles they should have fought in. Maybe not Cowpens, but damn they would look good there.

I have King Richard's standard in a wagon for Arsuf. Only ever used it for Arsuf. I've made another one for Otto's standard at Bouvines. Plus all the commanders … I mean, some fight elsewhere … some don't (and some can be used in more generic games).

But generally the more work that goes in, the better the rewards so it pays off in the end.

I am doing a Denmark strait game just now, as it happens and yes, all those ships will be prepared.

History is its own justification I reckon wink

Heck, I've got units that NEVER actually saw action. but since we almost never do refights of actual battles, it doesn't matter.

No such thing as a one battle unit.

Mako1104 Jul 2015 11:38 a.m. PST

So, are you trying to imply that I'm wasting my money on all those wonderful Cold War vehicles, aircraft, and troops that never fired a shot?

Blasphemy!!!!!

Preach it brothers!

My pedantry rarely extends to refights with the exact OOBs, terrain, weather, etc.

Hear-hear! I'm with enfant perdus and rmaker.

Case in point: for the 1745-46 Jacobite rebellion, I have figures for the Manchester Regiment (even though it never saw any real action) as well as militia units that never fought anything larger than a skirmish (if that), plus Hessians and Guards that also were in the field or available for action but did not see combat.

I will use them for ahistorical scenarioes and for use as equivalent troop types in historical scenarioes.

There are lots of units that fought in a very small number of units – the Hussars of the Supreme Power, the Tulancingo Cuirassiers and the Grenadiers of the Supreme Power (all of which I have) are pretty specific to the Mexican American War but I use them for a bunch of ahistorical games

And then there is the wonderful world of Imagi-Nations. We had Russians entering into the American Civil War via Alaska. Naturally, Russia supported the Union, the Tsar frowns on any sort of secessionists.

Tom Bryant07 Jul 2015 6:41 p.m. PST

Count me among the heretics here. Unless it was truly a "one off" unit that only was used in one battle I'd make use of it all over the place.

Part of the fun of gaming is doing the "What is's" that some seem to avoid. There's not much point in doing a Waterloo or Midway battle where all one side has to do is "not make histoical mistakes" unless the key essence of the battle can be distilled and poured into the game.

waaslandwarrior08 Jul 2015 12:05 p.m. PST

I'm currently painting Dutch-Belgians for Quatre-Bras.
I could use most of them for Waterloo too, but that's it.

So I will make up some what-if scenario's later.

Old Contemptibles09 Jul 2015 9:33 p.m. PST

Why is this even a poll? You use the figures in non-historical battles or in a campaign game. Check please!
