Bill,

You should have a simple "No" on the poll. :-)

Cowboy14 Sep 2004 1:20 a.m. PST

Never played it, and althought the minis look good, I will probably not play it as it is waaay down on my list of must buys due to my cash situation.

And yes I do have a pair ;)

I refuse to play it due to the absurdity of the proportions on their big mech type things. I cannot express how much I HATE the "gigantic shoulders on a thing with little spindly legs" look. They just scream "forget fighting me, just tip me over and I'll never get up."
Sorry, I just can't suspend disbelief that much.

Now you need to run a poll to ask about Warhammer. And keep running them every year, and watch WM surpass WH.

And, just for the record, I don't play war machine, nor do I care to, but I see it growing and WH shrinking.

Niggle14 Sep 2004 4:07 a.m. PST

The game rocks. If you ever geta chance to play in a demo go for it, if you haven't played. It is fairly simple to learn but has many complexities that make it very interesting, not to mention trying to figure out winning combos. Only problem is when you figure out a wining combo so does your opponent so than you have to figureout a new one.

Fun game - not realistic at all, but great figures, fast, and furious.

Goldwyrm14 Sep 2004 5:10 a.m. PST

The poll lacks a "not interested" choice.

"...but I see it growing and WH shrinking."

WM growing perhaps, but I don't see WH shrinking particularly, or WM taking a big chunk out of their sales.

Wow - Finally a poll I can vote "All The Time" in.

I usually get 2 games of Warmachine in a Week at my LGS. And I have been playing steady since May. I have always been impressed by Warmachine and the work Privateer Press has been producing. I wanted to start playing earlier but Chronopia was our group’s main game for the longest time.

One observation I can make about Warmachine, as opposed to other Non-GW games I have played is - It has been a lot easier to get people to try Warmachine and ultimately get hooked on it. The Warjacks, Figure Sculpts and Stat Cards really stand out and I rarely get someone stopping by our tables saying "Oh, your playing Warhammer".

As has been mentioned the Rules aren't that complex, the secret is the Special Abilities that Units and Warcasters have, which makes building your Army a lot of fun as you look for interesting and nasty combinations to employ against your opponent.

Warmachine doesn't fall into the Traditional Fantasy Genre, being a “Steam Punk” Fantasy Game. But I found the Background to be pretty interesting.

I also like that Privateer Press is doing Supplement Books, where every Army gets new Warcasters and Units instead of Army Books. I think this helps keep the game balance even, plus it’s a great way to move the storyline forward.

Overall I have been very impressed with Warmachine and the Privateer Press Crew.

Cheers
Junk Runner

I love the game, but I don't see it supplanting Warhammer in any way. I always think it amusing when people such as Odin take his either/or position about the game. Contrary to what he seems to believe, many gamers play BOTH. I know I do, as do most people in my area AND many I have run into at Cons. The games are both fantasy, but are apples and oranges as far as scale of the armies and battles.

mweaver I think odin is just another one of those (I hate GW and therefore it must die crowd) so his post is wishful thinking. It is just more of the narrow-minded thinking of the loud minority that some how feel that GW has ruined the hobby yet can't see the positive effect having a company like GW around has.

If anything GW has a direct and indirect effect on the growth of the hobby. Games like Warmachine would most likely not be around if not for the interest created by Warhammaer and 40K. Also many Historical Gaming manufactures and products would not be around now if not for the indirect effect of the former and current GW players expanding into other areas of wargaming.

Instead of wishing for the demise of GW, wargamers in general should be hoping for it's continued health.

BTW I like the Warmachine game and miniatures very much. Good fluff and it plays very fast which is good for Club Nights at the game store. My only gripe is the very short ranges for wepons but I can live with it. When i want something more "realistic" I have many fine Historical games I enjoy playing.

I voted no but would like to.I would like to play if somebody else paints the figs and runs the game locally. My nephew has figs and the rules, but Satan will be wearing longjohns before he runs a game.

Vanilla Gorilla14 Sep 2004 10:28 a.m. PST

I Love it. I love Warhammer too.

40K, notsomuch.

Nothing really against 40K but I prefer the scale, look and story behind WarMachine. I usually only get to play anything (besides Smash Brothers on the GameCube with my daughters) except on club night.

WarMachine allows me to get 2-3 games in (@ 400-500 points) a night with many different variations, and it takes up less space which means more games going on the available tables. Of all of the WM games I have played, very few have been complete run-aways. Most WM games tend to be very competative.

When I have the urge to play Warhammer I need to devote the whole night to it, and there is nothing wrong with that either. The Warhammer system doesn't really lend itself to fast play and there is the slightly more common lopsided game.

Maybe I'm just too old or have too many other factors that draw on my time, but I really find myself wanting games that have a shorter play-time over the last few years. WarMachine and more recently The Star Wars Mini's game from WOTC have been godsends in that regard.

Wow VG, that is a whole thread all to itself on Time VS Gaming. I could not agree more with all you said. Except I'm steering clear of the Star Wars thing from WOTC. They are nicley done for prepainted figs and I hear the rules are good. But I for one have an adversion to the "pig in a poke" marketing of wargaming.

Madzerker14 Sep 2004 11:02 a.m. PST

Those of you who havnt played warmachine should give it a try. I also have no interest in the "mechs" at all (I do like most of the human sculpts though). But one game of playing I was hooked because the rules are awesome!

Triskele Games Jason14 Sep 2004 11:17 a.m. PST

I was considering giving the game a go, but a combination of several things really turned me off to the company. So, I'll buy some of their (generally awesome) minis for conversion fodder but I can't see myself ever actually playing a game.

CorpCommander14 Sep 2004 11:33 a.m. PST

I've been playing Warmachine for the last year. Interest in it has been growing which is great. I've picked a few games in the past to play that have disappointed me because interest never really took off (Chronopia and Warmaster in particular.)

The rules are fun - but complicated. They definitely lend themselves to lots of tactical thought though which is refreshing.

The models are quite interesting to me. I like most of the sculpts quite a bit. They've even gone off and redone a few of them for more dramatic posing. The several styles they have now are well executed. Certainly not everyone's cut of tea but for me they are quite inspiring. They are also quite easy to assemble even when they have as many as 10 parts. The sculptors are quite skilled.

There was that controversy here a few weeks ago but to be honest, its a tempest in a teacup. Much was overstated on both sides. I for one am glad its over.

Warmachine is starting to be one of those games where no matter where I go I can find an opponent. That says a lot. Will it compete with GW? I can't say. I do know that running 40K tournaments at our convention just simply died and we've removed it from the program. We are adding Warmachine in the same space so take that for what it's worth.

I know the tactics involved in the Warmachine game have kept me interested and playing for over a year now. And I feel each faction is equally competitive with all other factions and it is more how you use what you put on the table than making sure you have the right thing on the table. It is one of the few miniature games I would ever consider playing in a tournament. I also like the speed of play, 500 points is the standard tournament size and I was able to get two 1000 point games in last Thursday evening after work. I also come from a GW background and think their warmaster system is the best system they have.

Neotacha14 Sep 2004 3:38 p.m. PST

I would have chosen a simple no, if that had been an option.

Not my cuppa.

pphalen14 Sep 2004 5:32 p.m. PST

I would have liked to see a "No, read the rules, own 1000+ PAINTED points of EACH faction, please help me I'm sick of being so OCD" poll option

CorpCommander14 Sep 2004 6:20 p.m. PST

OCD?

nazrat14 Sep 2004 7:36 p.m. PST

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder-- a malady MANY of us seem to have, considering that we just keep buying and buying miniatures. Heck, I want some RIGHT NOW!!

sturmkraehe14 Sep 2004 8:34 p.m. PST

Triskele - Not sure what has turned you off to the company. Pehaps it was the quality of their product, incredible customer service, decision to place gameplay above attorney's fees, or their loyalty to the gaming community...either way, you are missing out.

Bryan Shein14 Sep 2004 9:17 p.m. PST

I play almost exclusive historical games. After playing a couple games of WarMachine, I will be planning a new purchase. I even like the fact it is a local manufacturer!

Good thing they can't be snorted or taken intravenously. :-)

"Good thing they can't be snorted or taken intravenously. :-)"

Yeah... ummm, good thing.. cause they can't..really don't even try...it won't work....

So I've heard...

mweaver15 Sep 2004 5:38 a.m. PST

They do make some nice miniatures. I don't have a lot of use for the warjacks, myself, though.

Huscarle15 Sep 2004 8:34 a.m. PST

I agree that they make some fine miniatures (I've purchased a few human-types even though they are a bit pricey over here in blighty). I haven't played WM (yet), but I've been very impressed with all of their associated RPG Iron Kingdoms stuff - it's of the highest quality. I would like to give WM a go at sometime, but then its just finding the time (as always). Oh and I generally play anything that's going (except GW), that's me jack of all eras and master of none.

GuruDave15 Sep 2004 9:59 a.m. PST

How does WM compare to Gear Krieg by Dream Pod 9? And whatever happened to Luftkrieg? I dropped a bundle on LK miniatures and rules booklets and I haven't had a chance to play it yet, and support seems to be non-existent. Hey, wait! That describes 90% of my miniatures gaming experiences!

nazrat15 Sep 2004 11:27 a.m. PST

Apples and oranges, as far as minis and background. No valid comparison possible, I think. But anybody is welcome to prove me wrong...
