The Black Company by Glen Cook is crying for a series – also loved his Dread Empire trilogy (which turned out to have 8 books in all with prequels and sequels, but that's a different story) |

Same hedge as the SF poll. The requirements for a good film aren't the same as for a TV series, though I'll grant you a "long arc" series blurs the distinction a bit. There's a serious difference between one story, however great, and a setting or group of characters you can use for dozens of stories. |
