Interesting choice

Tolkien is clearly a favourite for Lord of the rings for a lot of reasons – the Silmarilion, while it could make for some good gaming, is a fair bit tougher read

The Peshawar Lancers also is made for great gaming

Lyonesse is fantastic but not particularly war-gameable. i'll say Tolkien with "Chainmail" as supporting evidence :)

No Guardians of the Flame? It is about a group of gamers sent into the fantasy world they are playing in,wow total poll fail!

Lord of the Rings "series"? What series was that?

e4warde24 Apr 2017 7:57 a.m. PST

The battles in the Wheel of Time are vividly detailed.

Yes,and I'm surprised it wasn't nominated. Maybe because he decided to milk it more than originally planned,to the point that reading the latest one became a chore:

Balderdash. Why didn't YOU nominate it if you like it so much?
You've been around a while. Poll Suggestion thread ran last September. You should know how polls operate. If a book (which I never heard of, by the way) isn't nominated, it doesn't make it to the poll.

I love Peshawar Lancers, and it has ganeable bits--but they're colonial or VSF bits, not fantasy. And I wear out copies of Lord Kalvan--but it games as straight pike & shot.

It's Tolkien and Howard that bring forth the fantasy armies.

Oh, Winston. You'd have to work a bit at not hearing of Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame in some circles, but from my point of view it has the same problem as many others---plenty of derring-do, but no battles larger than a so-so D&D encounter. Same thing with Anderson's Three Hearts and Three Lions.

As terrible as most of the Shannara books are (I gave up after the third one), I did a Battlesystem miniatures campaign of the battles against the demon horde in Elfstones of Shannara.

Surprised that Fiest is not getting more love.

His early books were perfect for Wargaming.

Hafen von Schlockenberg25 Apr 2017 9:07 p.m. PST

I agree with that. You could probably use Samurai, Chinese, and maybe Aztecs, for Tsurani. And of course,Petal Throne figures.

But the Riftwar Saga wasn't nominated,so. . .

Weasel26 Apr 2017 11:08 a.m. PST

Shoot yea, Riftwar would make great gaming.

The first book was fantastic, by the second, I stopped reading.
