George RRRRRRR Martin. So I can scream "Where is The Winds of Winter????" |

Oh, give it a break. That ship sailed long ago, and yelling at him is about as likely to produce another book--let alone a conclusion--as screaming at a broken car is to get it to take you to work. Whatever he was, he used to be. What amazed me about the pre-poll discussion was that there are evidently still Michael Moorcock fans out there. I was stunned that he was still alive, of course. But astounded that his fiction hasn't gone the way of bellbottoms and tie-dyed shirts. I'd have said you had to be a teen in the 60's to mainline that much cynicism and pastiche. |

Maybe he'll come through with a final short story where the big meteor hits and everybody dies, or Dr. Robert Hartley wakes up after a very long and involved dream. It's a write your own ending adventure! =^,^= |

Okay. How about Jim Butcher where I can complain that his arc is exactly like my son watching far too many seasons of Dragon Ball Z? Every season, book, is even harsher than the previous one, but Our hero reaches deep down inside and summons the last fiber of his being to overcome the Bad Guys who will be insignificant next season/book! |

But I'm still pissed at Martin. 😄 |

How about E.E.'Doc'? Each book from his Lensmans series would up the ante in space battles. From a one on one all the way to two giantic fleets Firing beams that were so powerful that they were quasi solid! |

Mind you I still love the Lensman series anyway! |

E. E. Smith died sixty years ago, so might be a bit pointless to invite? |
robert piepenbrink | 23 Dec 2025 5:57 a.m. PST |
If we get to invite dead fantasy authors, dibs I Tolkien, Bob Howard and Lord Dunsany! When we do dead SF writers, Doc Smith is on my list, though. |
robert piepenbrink | 23 Dec 2025 11:29 a.m. PST |
Oh. And I should add Stephen King to the list of invite-worthy dead fantasy authors. (You don't think he's dead? I figure somewhere between Christine and It, much the way Heinlein passed away between The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and I Will Fear no Evil and Edgar Rice Burroughs died Between Chessmen and Master Mind.) |
