Possibly the end of the first round, and I find myself thinking more "why didn't I nominate this or that book?"

For the record, though, no such thing as the best SF book. There may be a best hard SF, a best Mil SF, a best "sociology through science fiction" and so forth. None of which matters, because by round three, there will be nothing left but novels with movie adaptations.

Don't forget Best Alternate History.

Best sci-fi novel that was never made into a movie? wink

But one could say that the books were that good that they turned them into a movie. Lord of the Rings were hugely successful before they were made into movies. The book had to have sold well and been widely read for there to be movies made.

An ideal immediate follow up when this Poll is completed. Great idea.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
Tau Zero
Ringworld
Old Man's War
Lest Darkness Fall
Earth Abides
Canticle for Leibowitz

At least the moon is a harsh mistress got to be a song by Jimmy Webb

"The Weapon Shops of Isher" didn't make the Poll, sadly.
It's no wonder it never made it into a movie. "The right to buy weapons is the right to be free." THAT wouldn't make it as a movie in these days. 😄😱
Especially with the DOJ mulling banning trans people from buying guns.

Yes, alternate history would be another good one OFM. Also time travel and parallel worlds as two separate categories. (Would Utopias and Dystopias be one category or two?)

Bill, let's go with the "never made into a movie" poll. My nominees:
Shards of Honor
Secret of Sinharrat
The Dragon Waiting
With the Lightnings
Oath of Fealty
My Enemy, My Ally
Final Reflection
Witches of Karres
Demon Breed

I wouldn't expect most of them to get out of the first round, but maybe a few people will look them up and be pleasantly surprised.

Sad, but almost certainly true…
