As usual, the Western Theater gets short thrift when its campaigns covered larger areas and were more important in defating the Confederacy -- Vicksburg and Atlanta in particular.

Bragg's 1862 invasion of Kentucky would also make a great campaign.

Morgan's Raid! Small-scale campaign. What can be accomplished by the CSA with limited resources but superior mobility and the element of surprise and panic from opponents?

I chose the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign because it involves small forces on both sides, lots of map movement and it seems well suited for generating games on the wargame table. All of these elements make for a good campaign that will keep its participants engaged (which maintains their interest in the campaign).

Agree about the Valley – for the other choices, some of the campaign suitability is reduced by the fact that they were very much influenced by key issues in the high command (Antietam springs to mind) or are likely lost causes (Wilderness or – not mentioned – the Franklin–Nashville Campaign in the West in 1864)
