No problem with unpainted figures, can't be any worse than 3 beautifully painted figures pretending to be 500 troops. |

One of the most fun convention game I played was long ago an early 40K game where 1/2 the figures were unpainted or primed, had a blast. |

None of these: no. The situation simply does not arise in out local group. Gamemasters make sure they have completed any project before they put on games. |

It doesn't happen in our group. However, think of a scenario where you encounter someone with an unpainted army in the first round of a tournament. You refuse to play him. He gets the win. What if everyone refused to play him? He has no losses and then wins the toy! So it's up to the tournament organizers to police this heinous crime against humanity. |

Why would you want to do such thing and why would anyone conceive of playing with unpainted figures? A miniature wargame should be more than just a contest; it should be a visual experience of equal importance. |

I have played more against (and with) unpainted than painted. Early on (late 80's /early 90's) I tried to enact a policy of "noticeable progress" for each successive game. I have played against units that went from pegboard to register to table in a matter of minutes. Many had bases and arms yellow-tacked on. Sometimes they fell over / apart just sitting there. Those had to make armor saves vs. heatstroke or leprosy. If they made it, they got to be re-puttied. Odd that often the most ad-hoc the games can be the most fun. Now, I would hope everybody at least had their minis with a base coat (not like primer). |

I have played against un painted armies, and that was fine at the time. My current gaming buddy always paints his soldiers etc. and I do too. It is more enjoyable to see a nicely painted army on each side. But I understand new players and young players not having painted armies yet. |

For sure – have done it many a time My OCD prevents me from fielding unpainted troops but many of the local guys don't share my disorder |

New player? Someone wanting to try a set of rules right now? Not my preferred option, and I'd always wait to get my own figures painted, but I'm prepared to go with it if there's a good reason. Not on a regular basis. Oh, and if it's a regular club member, yes, merciless mocking. The best heckle I heard on the subject was 'Who are the cybermen fighting this week?' |

I paint both sides, so no problem. Otherwise the group I game with wouldn't put up with it. But we all have both sides painted so hasn't been an issue. We do tolerate poorly painted figures to a point. Once and only once, one of our guys bought some ECW cavalry online and they were so badly painted we wouldn't let him use them. We laughed so much we could barely carry on with the game. This is defiantly more of issue with historical players. Probably because uniforms are more important in that hobby. I have seen lots of non-historical games being played with unpainted figurers. Doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with them. |

Doesn't tournaments require figures to be painted? At least the ones I have been in or my friends have been in, require it. Automatic disqualification if not. |

I don't play tournaments, so don't know usual practice there. As for friendly games, I believe that for a first time I would kindly press the unpainted minis owner to have his miniatures painted the next time. Naturally, my vehemence at regard would strongly depend on how much effort the rest of players had devoted to their own miniatures, or the scenario itself. |

I have played against unpainted, unassembled figures jammed loosely into slot-bases, with plasticine proxies in the same army. I also played a game against figures that had been primed white and given a quick brown wash. It was half way through the game (F&IW) that I realized they hadn't actually been painted. |

Other: Absolutely, positively NO, under no circumstances. I have occasionally done some solo walk-throughs on the rules with unpainted figures at home, late at night. But even then I usually give myself heck for ever doing such a thing. |

new player or new game for some one – sure. I don't mind proxies either for a bit. Otherwise it loses something for me. |
