"Empire" is a simple rules set?

I assume that was a joke.

I thought the same and also included DBA and DBM!

I'd accept DBA for simple, but DBM always struck me as Barker's nerve failing. And by the time he got to DBR, he'd clearly repented of the whole "simplicity" thing.

The real problem is copyright. There's no money in two-page rules sets, so the best of them are hidden away in the back issues of old magazines while the 50 to 100 page behemoths are massively advertised and come out in new editions every five years or so.

Not many of theses seems simple to me!

My own home made ones for participation games. If it takes up more than 2 sides of A4 paper at 12pt text, it's too complicated.

My SYW and AWI rules are printed on one side of a sheet of paper. I developed the rules specifically with convention games in mind because I don't want a player to be at a disadvantage because he wasn't familiar with the rules. I find that the players can pretty much run the game after the second turn. I just manage Rules questions after that.

TFLs What a Tanker. There are basically 6 different "cards". You roll your hand each turn and do the best you can with your hand. Pretty simple.

I have used Junior General, it is designed by a teacher for students – it is scenario based on real battles. I mashed together a combined Napoleonic set based on the common rules for all those scenarios. you could do the same for ancients etc.
