Maybe I just don't understand what Sword and Sandal means.

When I hear "sword and sandal" I think of 50's and 60's movies set in ancient (or more often biblical) settings, where everyone wears sandals and carries swords, obviously. I guess I don't think of more modern movies that are about ancient times, or definitely not fantasy movies. But…. ?

I feel the same way. Several of these weren't "sword and sandal" movies.

The Thief of Baghdad (Korda version) is from 1940, not 1961.
Terrific movie, but not a "swords and sandals" film.

The 1961 ToB is the Italian one starring Steve Reeves. I agree that the 1940 Korda-Sabu version is better, but it evidently wasn't nominated. And the 1924 Douglas Fairbanks version is the best, especially with the full theater organ version of the score.

Sword and sandal is just what movie people call ancients. So any pre dark age epic movie is a sword and sandal movie.

Really liked "The Eagle".

Scorpion King is fantasy so should be sword and sorcery. Sword and sandal was not just movies set in ancient times, it was specifically the epic ones like Ben Hur and The Spartans.
I think Sinbad would have been regarded as fantasy or maybe swashbuckler as those types of adventure movies are a crossover between pirate and fantasy.

Totally agree.

But looks like many who are voting have not seen good Sword & Sandal movies.

Spartacus is a Sword & Sandal movie

Life of Brian is not.

rmaker29 Jul 2019 2:10 p.m. PST

To all the critics – "Sword and Sandal" was a semi-official Hollywood category for any movie set in ancient times or in a fantasy equivalent.

But still quite funny,Mithmee.

"Life of Brian is not."

Hey! They were all wearing sandals. And some fellows had swords. Such as The Judean People's Front!

And the Romans, they've got swords.
