Hmm. I clearly failed to nominate Barbara Hambly. Otherwise, the list is divided between authors I never heard of and authors I'd cross the street to avoid meeting. But, as noted in previous polls, you can't have much of a discussion about taste.

The only one I've heard of is rather old by now.

Not being a fantasy reader there are very few names I have even heard of. So, just clicking any names that seem familiar.

Naomi Novik: Napoleonic wars with dragons— the Temeraire series. Very gameable, and would fit right in with a con.

Megan Whalen Turner: Eugenidese series, aka The Thief series. Exceptionally good mysteries which you don't realize are mysteries until the end. There's a certain hint of D&D in the things, but they are *not* D&D fantasy novels— far more intelligent, and a world of their own— no magic, except for the influences of the very real (and enigmatic) gods.

Steve Jackson (UK)— from Games Workshop, but also the creator of the Fighting Fantasy choose your path books (recently being republished in cooperation with Steve Jackson Games (US, no relation).

I'd heard of the Temeraire books. Didn't remember the author's name. Always a problem for me when when some author says "the history of my world has been deeply different--magic, new races and such--for centuries, but somehow it's still exactly in synch with your history textbooks." (Different if it's a "secret history" thing where vampires, dragons or whatever have been a part of our history but most people didn't know.)

John M. Ford could get away with it in The Dragon Waiting, but Ford could get away with just about anything.
