Never played neither.

I played BT a good bit in the 80's & early 90's. I was excited about AS's release, and dusted off my mechs in anticipation. But I didn't like it, and am working on a house rules mod and will hopefully get to try it out next month.

Call me a battle tech purist but I prefer the good old version. I found alpha strike too dumbed down a version and lacking a lot of flavor that the base game provided.

Classicist. Been with BT since Battledroids. Good enough for skirmish and roleplay. AlphaStrike didn't interest me.

After all these decades, finally a real fast play version, woohoo!

Gearing up for Battledroids Alpha Strike now with the 1/144 mechs =^,^=

We play nothing but Alpha Strike, with a few mods to speed up the game, but we love it for the reasons mimiMo and D6 Junkie stated. 3 hours and a battalion level fight can be done!

Now that said, we did mod it. We take a unit's firepower rating, and we roll 1D12 per point (if you have an FP of 4 at medium range, you roll 4D12, for example). That, and we D12'd the criticals table, and you have a fast play game go even faster.

We love it. Is it as granular? Nope. But when you are doing company and battalion level engagements, do you really care that an individual 'Mech is going to hot load it's LRMs and change facing to it's right to max it's dirt die this turn? Or are you more worried about the fact that the Battle Lance commander is lagging in the rate of advance and the Fire Lance STILL isn't in position to support the sweep of the Pursuit Lance on the enemy left?

Haven't played Classic for awhile, but have played Alpha Strike. Liked it, but thought it was kind of bland and stuff dies too fast now, I think. Has made me want to try Classic again, though.

Alpha Strike is probably the better game but I find Classic has more charm.
