I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.

Yes, Orwell wrote those words but they in no way articulate his view on war any more than Tolkien thought bridges should not be crossed.

Yes, Orwell wrote those words

Absolutely. Orwell put those words in the mouth of Big Brother, the political entity you were supposed to fear becoming, so, yeah, not close to a sympathetic character.

Plus 1 to Flashman14 and etotheipi.

Orwell's quotation actually seems badly out of place in this initial list.

Unless those that voted for it, are genuinely honest to god facists, in which case the quote might perfectly sum up their view.

Have to disagree, Gunfreak. One of the very few nice things I'll say about the Hitlers and Mussolinis of this world is that while they sometimes lie, they don't engage in euphemisms: when they conquer, kill and loot, that's what they say they're doing. It's the Leninist left which calls extermination "re-education" and "relocation," conquest "liberation" and colonies "republics."

The wacko right might pick the old Patton quote about all other human activities being insignificant next to war, but they wouldn't call it "peace."
