Thieves world, a dozen books, a whole host of short stories. Couldn't be a movie, might be a 5 year TV series which we all stop watching in the middle of year 3 as the stories changed into re-imaginings of old Dukes of hazard episodes.

Then again, Xenophon and the Anabasis… That could be a thing of beauty with a decent budget.

For Xenophon, check out The Warriors (1979). Yes, it's set in a modern urban environment, but the story is quite recognizable.
